The Nerve Tour with Gil Hedley

Where does your consciousness live?

The deeper we go, the more mysterious everything is.

If you have not had the interest in peering into the intricacies of the human body, you may wonder why, being that it is as much you as what you perceive yourself to be.

Recently I was researching the pituitary gland and discovered Gil Hedley, a charismatic and funny individual who has dedicated his life to exploring the inner world of the human body. He is a “somanaut“, keenly aware of the phenomenon of consciousness awakened through the temple of our body and is enthusiastic about sharing his insights and guidance in exploring the human form. I was able to make a deeper connection to these places within myself after listening to his presentations that are organized on his website and YouTube channel.

Integral Anatomy

“My combined interests in ethics, anatomy, and human potential has supported my personal exploration of the human body and led me to develop an integral approach to the study of human anatomy. “Integral Anatomy” looks beyond “regions” to explore and appreciate the whole body continuities and relationships of the textural layers into which that first embryonic cell has differentiated. Integral anatomy sees nature as a mirror reflecting self, rather than other, and looks to develop an understanding of the whole person as well as the whole body.”

“Over the past 27 years, I have led hundreds of hours of Hands-On Human Dissection Workshops in the laboratory. Through this in-person work, as well as keynote presentations and online programs, I have encouraged thousands of fellow “somanauts” to appreciate, explore, and embody the wonders of the human form.”

Gil Hedley

When I heard about Gil coming to my area to give a presentation on the intricacies of the nervous system, I jumped at the opportunity. So, I took my husband out on a date to Ashland, Oregon where we delightfully were immersed in five hours of exploring the astonishingly complex nervous system tissues. This presentation altered my personal relationship to my own nervous system. Additionally, it has deepened my sensitivity and understanding of how to facilitate my work as a biofield tuning practitioner.

The Nerve Project: Exploring the Nerve Tree in Relationship

This interactive presentation visually reveals Gil’s current findings from the anatomy lab, after spending the first five months of 2023 at the Institute for Anatomical Research in Colorado Springs, CO, meticulously dissecting a beloved donor form to reveal the integral and extraordinary nature of the nervous tissues.

Simply put, nothing has been done quite like this before, and Gil is very excited to share this with you.

Gil has worked for the past 30 years in the dissection lab, and this is the first dissection of its kind to be documented in images and video from the characteristically integral perspective for which Gil is best known.

The story of how Gil came to the Nerve Project is very heartwarming and was an unexpected feature to this presentation. The experience had an emotional texture that maybe isn’t so common when viewing the abstraction of a human form unbound from the boundary of skin.

His way of engaging with his work is from the deepest gratitude and appreciation for those who have donated their bodies and to their families for supporting the research. He intimately knew the person that is now the main feature of the Nerve Project, and he held their body with ultimate respect and care. Perhaps that is an intentional aspect of what his message is.

Can we hold our own bodies with awesome love, abundant appreciation and deep respect?

Division of the nervous system into its various categories of names is somewhat misleading. What Gil demonstrated in this groundbreaking presentation is that the nerves of our body are like a single vining plant that winds its way around the arterial venous channels and is very much woven into every feature of the body and throughout the layers of the subcutaneous and cutaneous tissue, possibly even the entirety of our tissues.

The nervous system is in a constant state of feeding sensory information into the brain. It anatomically presents as a very dynamic and complex system of fibrous “wires” ranging in size from microscopic to spider web thickness to visible from the surface of the skin. The nerves are not in a fixed state but are capable of stretching and gliding within tissues.

Perceiving the continuity of the nervous system, it appears in the pattern of dendritic webbing, providing tensegrity, structure, and integrity to the layers of the body.

It is embedded within the fascia and muscle tissue from the toes to the brain as one continuous “sensory fleece” and we can access this sensory information through focused attention on any place in the body at any given time.

Gil likens the anatomical structure of the nervous system to trees; in the way they have a trunk and create branches with smaller branches reaching out. Seeing the body as part of what nature is doing gives us a sense of our intimate relationship with the earth and the universe.

Interestingly, each body presents in its own unique way of expressing the schematic of human form. Likened to the way a species of plant or animal can have a variety of phenotypes through the breeding process, it appears that the human species has innumerable potential ways to grow a body. This was noted in the presentation because academia has a way of putting the final stamp on defining subjects, but it just isn’t always the case with the way a body individuates.

The textbook explanation of anatomy compartmentalizes the information, giving the impression that the body is segmented, rather than all systems intimately woven together while our consciousness has the potential to be aware of every cell.

The main point he emphasizes is that our bodies are integrated systems within systems that are not exactly fitting nicely into the box that standard models try to present them. These systems are not separate from the definition of who and what we are. His message is that the body is our domain and we are free to explore this inner space without needing to obtain explicit permission. It’s not just for academia to determine what is going on in the body.

Gil likes to lead people into a meditative somatic experience he calls being a somanaut, encouraging us to claim this inner space and familiarize ourselves with the territory.

Anatomy is not just for textbooks and practitioners. You have a body, and it’s probably a great idea to learn everything you can about how it works!

What I love about the way he shares this knowledge is that he is always referring to the vibrational continuity of our bodies and that we are in fact resonant beings. He clearly understands a thing or two about the power of using sound to tune our body into a healthy expression of coherence.

On that note, I will share with you my personal reflections on the nervous system. It feels like the nervous system is not contained within the body, but that it also expands out into the biofield as part of the structural integrity of the torus shape of our electromagnetic energy field. The musing of my imagination fractalized this theory and I wonder if the universe is organized with a type of electromagnetic nervous system…which leads to so many more questions!

If you have the opportunity to see Gil Hedley on tour presenting the Nerve Project, please do attend. It will change your perception of your own nervous system and allow you to more deeply understand the complexities of your inner landscape and atmosphere.

I will always continue to explore and learn as much as I can about subjects that relate to my professional practice which is deeply woven into my curiosity and passion for living a creative and healthy life.

Thank you for taking the time to read to the end!
